“HYBRID Dance Intensive is an opportunity to challenge yourself~ to dig deeper into the mechanics, the form, and the expressive potential of our timelessly beautiful art form: Belly Dance. We will use a choreography and evocative piece of music to create a stunning performance in which you, as dancers will move as a family, a nomadic tribe or an entire people – interweave flight, crave and hustle in an astonishing fluidity of action.” ~ Olivia
Olivia Kissel’s HYBRID Dance Insensive fuses popular, regional and classical dance forms, creating a new language – a new movement vocabulary that is something original and unique. We will use the expressive potential of Tango, Jazz, Hip Hop, Flamenco, Contemporary Movement, and ~of course ~Belly Dance~ to convey the contained ferocity and lyrical weightlessness inherent in these forms.
HYBRID Dance Intensive participants will get a taste of how Olivia Kissel and Zafira Dance Company fuse various dance styles and evocative music to create unique and powerful performance art. Intensive participants will witness and take part in the creative process through a series of workshops and performance.
That’s right, we will perform together!
Performances offer a heightened urgency and excitement that delivers opportunities to challenge and express ourselves. After work-shopping Olivia’s choreography making it unique for our group, we will take it to the stage and perform the piece together!
Intensive participants will also have future opportunities to perform with Olivia, other professional dancers and other HYBRID Intensive alumni.

In this intensive, Olivia will guide students beyond the execution of the movements through activities that explore the principals of dance. Students will have a shared language and meaningful dance experience to express powerful nuanced qualities of movement, expression and intention. We will use a choreography and an evocative piece of music to create a stunning performance in which you, as dancers will move as a family, a nomadic tribe or an entire people – interweave flight, crave and hustle in an astonishing fluidity of action.
In this intensive we will:
• learn a choreography
• workshop this choreography for a performance at the end of the Intensive
• work with a basic template to have cohesive costuming
• perform this piece together at the main show at the end of the Intensive
Homework Alert: you will be required to learn a basic choreography via video before the intensive. The dance itself is a springboard for the work we are going to do together which is nothing short of –
~turning these mere movements into a bone-chilling dance together.
So… in order to get to the good stuff, we have to have a shared movement vocabulary. I will send you a video teaching the basic choreography, and you can contact me with questions before the intensive to make sure that you have it down before the workshops start. You will get the video of the choreography early so you will have at least 2 months to prepare.
Hybrid Choreography workshops held each day:
The choreography will reinterpret some belly dance classics by slowing down, speeding up, taking them apart and turning them inside out! We will dig into the body mechanics necessary to execute movement with clarity, definition and grace. We will also devote time to explore opportunities for personal expression, enabling us to turn these movements into DANCE. *Throughout the intensive we will use this choreography to explore the form, building a heightened sense of grace and balance through strength training exercises playing with time, space and intensity of movement to internalize the dance. We will share ideas for developing the dance and the piece will metamorphosis into something truly unique and different from what you learn in the video.
“The goal of the intensive is to dig deeper into our form and have meaningful dance experiences together. Dancers work on a project together, challenge themselves, and ultimately present their work to a regional audience. My personal goal with this project is to connect dancers around the world through these basic elements of movement: grace, tempo, space, effort and intention.” ~Olivia
